Confession -Jn 20: 22-23

- In persona Christi

o 2 fold authority

o Forgive sins

o Retain sins

Contrition -sorrow for your sins (e.g. heartily sorry)

Perfect contrition -sorrow for our sins out of love for God (e.g. because it offends thee) forgives even mortal sin immediately, going to Confession as soon as possible is implied.

Imperfect contrition (attrition) -sorrow for our sins out of fear of compromises (e.g. because of thy just punishment)

Three Theological Virtues

Faith -belief in God’s revelation

Responses to faith:

Open to receiving it

Cultivate/protect it

Hope -expectation of obtaining the promise of God’s salvation

Sins against Hope:

Despair -lack of hope

Presumption -expecting salvation by grace alone without regard for good works or expecting salvation by good works alone without regard for grace

Virtue -a good practice

Virtus -(Latin) strength

Vice -a bad practice

Charity -love of God and neighbor

Prudence -the ability to judge rightly

Justice -giving each person his due

Fortitude -Courage in the face of adversity

Temperance-moderation in the use of created goods

Grace -help from God

Sanctifying -a share in the divine life of God

Actual -supernatural assistance from God to do good

God’s grace and our will work together
